Self-care is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. Whether it’s for your artistic endeavors or a different part of your life, self-care influences all parts of your life, and can help avoid the ever so menacing art block. Here are 14 ways you can give yourself a little self-care.
Practicing Mindfulness
Building meditation and breathing exercises into your daily life can reduce stress, and enhance focus during creative sessions. My favorite way is to practice Yoga when I need some calmness and relaxation.
Create a Comfortable Working Environment
An ergonomic setup is a great way to reduce strain and boost productivity. A supportive chair, upright setup, good lighting, and strategically organized space can encourage a healthy setup for when you need a long art session.
Take Regular Breaks
Even with an ergonomic setup you still need to take breaks to avoid overworking yourself to the point of burnout. Breaks are a great way to refuel with snacks, stretch your wrists, and refresh your mind. It’s suggested to take a break every 30 minutes, especially if you sit for most of your day.
Engage in Physical Activity
Regular exercise can boost your mood, energy levels, and overall well-being. It’s a great way to blow off some steam if you are getting frustrated with a project too.
Maintain a Balanced Diet
Providing your body with nutritious foods that support brain function and energy can be beneficial to all aspects of your life. Not to mention is a healthier alternative to fueling up on caffeine and sugar to then later crash.
Seek Inspiration Elsewhere
Not all of your inspiration has to come from art. Nature, hobbies, interests, and experiences can provide you new perspectives and creativity.
Connect with Fellow Artists
Having a supportive network of creatives can be beneficial for feedback, collaboration, and support. Local artist groups, online communities and workshops can be a great way to connect with fellow artists.
Practice Self-Compassion
Be kind to yourself, especially during times of creative setbacks, self-criticism, or impostor syndrome. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and embrace the happy little accidents.
Stress Management
Stress can bog down your mental clarity and create tension. Art journaling, calming music, deep breathing and other de-stressing techniques can help alleviate stress.
Set Boundaries
Don’t overwork yourself by allowing art to take over your personal life. Set time aside to ensure you can relax and rejuvenate yourself.
Embrace Continuous Learning
As an artist, you are continuously learning. Ongoing education and developing skills can help you expand your capabilities as an artist and keep motivated. Aside from workshops, courses, and conferences, there are plenty of free resources online as well. There is always something new your can study or visit to polish up rusty skills.
Celebrate Achievements
Celebrating artistic milestones of all sizes can boost confidence and uphold motivation. And it’s a nice way to give yourself an excuse to buy that art book, or new art supply!
Prioritize Sleep
Ensuring that you get adequate amounts of sleep each night can support cognitive function, creativity, and health. Setting a bedtime routine and creating a sleep-friendly environment can aid in achieving a full nights rest.
Seeking Professional Help When Needed
Don’t hesitate to seek help from a professional for mental health support, career guidance, or managing artistic challenges.
